Robert De Niro backs Pete Buttigieg as the next US President

The Academy Award winning actor has been a vocal critic of Donald Trump

Robert De Niro has backed Pete Buttigieg as the next US President.

The Academy Award-winning actor has been a vocal critic of Donald Trump and the current political administration and now, it appears the actor has turned his support to Mayor Pete.

While speaking to The Daily Beast, De Niro was asked who he thinks could beat Trump, The Irishman star said he wasn’t sure but was leaning towards the out, South Bend, Indiana mayor.

He said: “I like Buttigieg.

“[…] He’s got all the credentials — Rhodes Scholar, Afghanistan veteran — even though he’s young, and if he could get a chance it could be something special, I think.

“As a gay person, he’s someone who comes from a marginalized community, so people from other ethnic groups can identify with him, even if they’re not gay, because they know what it’s like.

“I think he’s the best for what we need now.”

De Niro also suggested billionaire Michael Bloomberg and said he would consider backing former Vice President Joe Biden’s campaign.

He continued: “Biden could get us into calmer waters, that would be a good thing. He means well.” 

Biden continues to lead the national polls by Buttigieg has continually got more attention.
