Leeds Rhinos full-back Zak Hardaker is under investigation by the Rugby Football League after allegedly using a homophobic slur at a referee.

The England international has been accused of calling referee James Child a “fucking fag”, and could face a lengthly suspension if he is found guilty, The Guardian reports.

The incident is reported to have taken place during last Friday’s (May 30) Super League fixture between Leeds and Warrington.

The Rugby Football League issued a statement on Monday (June 2) confirming that “an allegation that Zak Hardaker of Leeds Rhinos made homophobic comments has been referred to the RFL compliance department, which has begun a formal investigation”.

RFL has stressed its zero tolerance policy regarding homophobia in the sport in recent years, with Leeds Rhinos promoting awareness of LGBT equality by wearing the Stonewall logo on their kit in a 2012 fixture against Widnes.

Hardaker has yet to respond to the allegations.
