Pope Francis: ‘Same-sex marriage threatens the family’

By Josh Haggis

Pope Francis has argued that the family is “threatened” by same-sex marriage.

The head of the Catholic Church, who only last year urged his peers to be “more open” and “less hostile” of change, made the comments during a speech in the Philippines this week, where he criticised the “ideological colonisation of the family”.

“The family is threatened by growing efforts on the part of some to redefine the very institution of marriage, by relativism, by the culture of the ephemeral, by a lack of openness to life,” he explained.

A spokesman for the Vatican confirmed today (January 16) that the Pope was – at least in part – referring to same-sex marriage.

Meanwhile, Elton John recently argued that Pop Francis should be made a saint because of his “compassion” – find out more here.
