Police probe whether US basketball player was killed on Grindr date

By Will Stroude

Police say a US basketball player found dead this week may have been murdered after arranging a date on Grindr, the New York Daily News reports.

Michael Wright, a former New York Nicks draft and European league player, was found dead in the back seat of his car in Brooklyn on Tuesday (November 10), in what police are now treating as a homicide.

Wright’s body was found with suspected head wounds and covered in garbage bags, after his roomate had reported him missing on Sunday (November 8). Detectives are investigating whether the 35-year-old may have been killed by someone he met on Grindr, police sources say.

“We are in disbelief,” Wright’s cousin Randolph Berry, 40, told the NY Daily. “They’re telling us it’s foul play. His mom is on her way to New York now.”

He continued: “He’s a gentle giant… he was a good person.”

Of the ongoing murder investigation, he added: “We don’t know anything about his personal life. All we know is that he did damage overseas. When he played ball, he destroyed everyone in front of him.”
