Police investigate anti-gay comments made by Northern Irish election candidate

By Ryan Love

Police in Northern Ireland have confirmed that they are investigating comments made by an election candidate last week.

Susan-Anne White first, who is standing as an independent in West Tyrone, first made headlines last month when she said that she would make homosexuality illegal if elected.

At a debate on Thursday night, she defended recent comments made by out-going Health Minister Jim Wells, who linked child abuse to gay parents.

“In the main what Jim Wells said was correct, and I can prove it,” White said to angry jeering, as she referenced a handful of cases involving the conviction of gay people.

“Studies have shown that homosexuals are 40 times more likely than the general populous to abuse children.”

PSNI Chief Inspector Joe McMinn confirmed that they are looking into the comments: “Police are making enquiries after receiving a complaint about comments made at a debate in the Strule Arts Centre in Omagh on Tuesday.”
