Police appeal for information after man is attacked by gang of four men outside Essex gay club

Police are appealing for information following the attack outside Colors nightclub in Basildon in the early hours of Sunday (1 April).

Police are appealing for information after a man was attacked outside a gay club in Essex over the weekend.

The victim, a man in his 40s, was assaulted by a gang of four men outside Colors nightclub in Basildon shortly before 4.30am on Sunday (1 April), the Basildon Standard reports.

Essex Police said in a statement that the assailants fled the scene in a silver Fiat, and urged potential witnesses or nearby businesses with CCTV to come forward.

“The victim was taken to hospital for his injuries, which are not life-threatening or life-changing,” a spokesperson said.

“Anyone with information, or any businesses with available CCTV in the area of Market Square and Southernhay which may have captured the incident, are asked to call us on 101 quoting incident 228 of 31/03.”

Police said that while they do not currently have evidence to suggest the incident was a hate crime, but they are “keeping an open mind” as to the motive behind the attack, adding that they believe it was a “targeted incident”.

Colors nightclub, which had hosted a DJ set by David Morales earlier in the night, said in a statement: “An incident took place outside the venue which was closed at the time.

“We have supplied CCTV footage and are assisting police with their investigation.”
