Olivia Newton-John has shared her views on the progress of the marriage equality movement.

The Grease star pledged her support publicly for marriage equality in her native Australia in 2012, saying in a statement: “With respect to marriage equality, I believe that no-one has the right to judge and deny couples who love each other the ability to make a marriage commitment.”

Asked if she is surprised by the momentum the movement has gathered in recent years, she told our friends at Queerty: “I think it’s fantastic. Not surprised, because I think we’re all becoming more educated and more aware. Just about every family has a gay member, I think.

“It used to be swept under the carpet, but not anymore. I think that as the awareness grows and the love grows, it will be accepted more and more.”

Continuing, Newton-John pointed out that some country’s attitudes towards LGBT rights are less progressive though, saying: “We’re very lucky that we have this in the free world. There are those in other countries who can’t be who they are.”

Newton-John, 65, began her residency at the Flamingo Las Vegas earlier this month (April) and is scheduled to perform at the Nevada venue until the end of August.
