New York now offers third gender option on birth certificates
The new option 'X' came into effect in the American city on January 1

New York City now offers a gender non-binary option on birth certificates.
The new option – which is for people who do not identify as male or female – came into effect on January 1 after it was signed into effect by the mayor of the US city Bill de Blasio last year.
Now New Yorkers can legally register to change their gender to ‘X’ on their birth certificate.
In a statement, the New York Health Department said: “The transgender and gender non-binary New Yorkers will no longer need a letter from a physician or an affidavit signed by a licensed health care provider to change their gender on their birth certificate.”
On Twitter, NYC Healthy wrote: “Effective today! People born in NYC can now change the gender marker on their birth certificates to “X.”
