Mitcham pips Daley to Commonwealth gold in men’s synchro

Australia’s Matthew Mitcham and Domonic Bedgood narrowly beat England’s Tom Daley and James Denny (pictured) to gold in the final of the men’s synchronised 10m platform event at the Commonwealth Games tonight (August 1).
The Australian pair amassed a six-dive total of 399.54 – just .18 of a mark ahead of the English duo’s six-dive total of 399.36.
Daley and Denny had trained together for just seven hours prior to the event, and an excellent final dive of 95.46 meant that they forced Mitcham and Bedgood to maintain a high standard right to the end, our friends at Sports Mole report.
The gold medal is especially sweet for out gay diver Mitcham, 26, who had won six Commonwealth silver medals prior to tonight’s final but never the top prize.
Meanwhile, the silver is the third Commonwealth medal of 20-year-old Daley’s career following the two golds he won at the Delhi games in 2010.
