Manchester Police Commissioner: ‘The Pusher does not exist’

By Will Stroude

Manchester Police and Crime Commissioner has issued a new statement denying rumours that a serial killer is targeting the city’s canal and gay village.

Earlier this week (January 12), Greater Manchester police shot down speculation that a serial killer could be pushing people into the canal following claims that it was “extremely unlikely” that the high number of bodies found in the city’s waterways over the last few years were all the result of accidents – click here to find out more.

In a new statement, the region’s Police and Crime Commissioner Tony Lloyd has reiterated the force’s words, saying: “The police have been quite clear – none of these tragic deaths are linked. ‘The Pusher’ does not exist.

“This unwarranted and ill-informed speculation serves no purpose except to cause more distress to people who have lost loved ones.

“Of course, people should always be careful around our canals and waterways, particularly in our entertainment districts where they are part of the unique attractiveness of the city of Manchester.”

Sixty-one bodies have been pulled from Manchester’s canals in the last six years. The police say that none of the deaths are currently being treated as suspicious.
