Man in critical condition after collapsing at Liverpool gay sauna
A man remains in hospital in a critical condition after collapsing in a Liverpool sauna sauna this weekend.
Police tape cordoned off the Fazakerley Street entrance to Splash sauna on Saturday (February 20) after a 54-year-old Blackpool man was found unconscious just 15 minutes after entering the venue, reports the Liverpool Echo.
After a customer raised the alarm to staff, the man was taken to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital where he remains in the critical condition.
The owner of Splash, who wishes to remain anonymous, told the Liverpool Echo it was a male nurse using the facility who discovered the man unconscious and unable to speak.
But he said police “didn’t suspect anything sinister”.
“I’m very anxious to know what has happened,” he said.
“I don’t want anybody to sustain any injury at my business. It’s horrid.”
A Merseyside Police spokeswoman confirmed forensic experts were called to the and “that an investigation is underway after a man collapsed in a Liverpool city centre sauna last night” (Friday February 19).
“The 54-year-old man, from Blackpool, was taken to the Royal Liverpool University Hospital shortly after 6pm after collapsing in the sauna. His condition is described as critical,” she said.
“At this stage the cause of the man’s condition is unknown and officers, along with medics, are working to establish the reasons behind his collapse.”
The incident comes as a spate of sauna closures in London raises questions around their future. Earlier this month, it was announced the Shoreditch branch of Chariots would be demolished, while the company’s Streatham branch was closed just two weeks later.
