Madonna: ‘Gay rights are more advanced than women’s rights’

By Josh Haggis

Madonna has argued that gay rights are more advanced than women’s rights.

The Queen of Pop, who looks set to land at Number One in the UK this week with her latest album Rebel Heart, has claimed that women’s rights have remained stagnant since 1983, while LGBT rights have continued to move forward.

“Gay rights are way more advanced than women’s rights. People are a lot more open-minded to the gay community than they are to women, period,” she told Out magazine. “It’s moved along for the gay community, for the African-American community, but women are still just trading on their ass.”

“To me, the last great frontier is women. They’re still the group that people won’t let change,” she said. “You must fit into this box: You must behave this way, dress this way.”

“You’re still categorized – you’re still either a virgin or a whore,” she added. “If you’re a certain age, you’re not allowed to express your sexuality, be single, or date younger men.”

Meanwhile, we recently asked attitude.co.uk readers to tell us what Madonna means to gay men – find out what you had to say here.
