LGBT celebrities and allies mark first National #StandUpToBullying Day – WATCH
Today marks the UK’s first ever National Stand Up to Bullying Day (July 5), and a raft of stars have shown their support for the occasion in a brand new video.
LGBT celebrities such as George Shelley, Kieron Richardson and Antony Cotton, as well as allies like Ben Cohen and Girl Aloud stars Nicola Roberts and Nadine Coyle, have all thrown their weight behind the campaign, which is encouraging the nation to stand up to bullying by visiting standuptobullying.co.uk.
The #StandUpToBullying campaign was established in honour of The Diana Award, a charity founded on the legacy of Prince William’s mother.
The Prince made history last month after becoming the first member of the British Royal Family to appear on the cover of an LGBT publication in Attitude’s July Issue – available to download now and in shops now.
After a groundbreaking meeting with 9 LGBT+ people, the Duke of Cambridge released a statement denouncing bullying in all its forms.
“The young gay, lesbian and transgender individuals I met through Attitude are truly brave to speak out and to give hope to people who are going through terrible bullying right now. Their sense of strength and optimism should give us all encouragement to stand up to bullying wherever we see it,” he said.
“What I would say to any young person reading this who’s being bullied for their sexuality: don’t put up with it – speak to a trusted adult, a friend, a teacher, Childline, Diana Award or some other service and get the help you need.
“You should be proud of the person you are and you have nothing to be ashamed of.”
