Jussie Smollett will be sued by the City of Chicago after he failed to pay the costs for an investigation into his alleged ‘racist and homophobic attack’.

The openly gay Empire actor was meant to pay $130,000 (£99,500) to cover the cost of the investigation after he claimed he was attacked by two white men who tied a noose around his neck.

However, after he continued to claim he was innocent after being arrested in February for filing a false police report, all criminal charges were dropped last month.

But the actor was ordered to pay the cover the costs of his recent criminal investigation by the city of Chicago.

However, the actor missed the deadline to pay the costs and now the city’s law department has issued a statement saying they intend to sue.

The statement read: “Mr Smollett has refused to reimburse the city Of Chicago for the cost of police overtime spent investigating his false police report on 29 January 2019.

“The law department is now drafting a civil complaint that will be filed in the Circuit Court Of Cook County.

“Once it is filed, the law department will send a courtesy copy of the complaint to Mr Smollett’s LA-based legal team.

“The lawsuit will be filed “in the near future” and the city will “pursue the full measure of damages allowed.”
