J.Lo, Laverne Cox honoured at GLAAD Media Awards

Jennifer Lopez and Orange is the New Black star Laverne Cox were among the stars honoured at the 25th annual GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles last night (April 12).

Jenny from the Block was handed the Vanguard Award by GLAAD (formerly the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Aginst Defamation) for her efforts to increase understanding of the LGBT community.

Lopez is currently serving as an executive producer on US TV drama The Fosters, which follows a lesbian couple raising their family. The Fosters went on to win the Outstanding Drama Series award at the event.

Ellen Page presented one of the stars of Orange is the New Black, actress and transgender activist Laverne Cox, with the Stephen F. Kolzak Award, which is awarded to gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender members of the entertainment industry. The award has previously gone to major LGBT figureheads in the entertainment industry such as  Ellen DeGeneres and Ian McKellen.

Canadian duo Tegan & Sara won the award for Outstanding Musical Artist for their 2013 album Heartthrob.

Other notable attendees at the event included supermodel Naomi Campbell, 12 Years a Slave star Lupita Nyong’o and Attitude contributor Charlie Condou.
