Indonesia to consider criminalising gay sex

By Fabio Crispim

Indonesia’s Constitutional Court may make sex between two men a crime, according to reports in the Associated Press.

A far-right group in the country called Family Love Alliance support the proposals, and have suggested sentences of up to 15 years for those found guilty.

Speaking to the Associate Press, Rita Hendrawaty, chairwoman of the group, said that they wanted to have “much clearer norms” in society.

A pro-LGBT march in Indonesia

“We are not intending to criminalise those who have deviant sexual orientation. That is not the point. They can be free to live but do not show what is their lifestyle.”

While homosexuality isn’t illegal in Indonesia, there is growing resistance to LGBT rights, with the country’s defence minister calling the LGBT rights movement “more dangerous than nuclear warfare”. The Indonesian Broadcasting Commission has also banned “gay propaganda” and feminine men from appearing on TV.
