By Josh Haggis

Germany’s Olympic team appear to have shown support for the LGBT community by wearing rainbow colours during the Sochi opening ceremony this afternoon (February 7).

2014 Winter Olympic Games - Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony for the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia kicked off at 4.14pm GMT this afternoon (February 7). It has been confirmed that faux-lesbian duo t.A.T.u. are to perform during the event.

In June 2013, Russia passed laws banning the promotion of “non-traditional sexual relations”, and there has been an increasingly hostile atmosphere towards the country’s LGBT community.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said gays visiting Russia for next month’s Sochi Olympics have nothing to worry about – provided they “leave children in peace”.

The Sochi Olympics run from today until February 23.
