Gay men who watch bareback porn more likely to have risky sex, study finds

By Fabio Crispim

Gay men who watch bareback porn are more likely to have risky sex,  according to a new study by Columbia University and Public Health Solutions.

265 gay and bisexual men were surveyed after being recruited using Facebook, and had all watched porn in the last three months and lived within 50 miles of New York City, Baltimore, Philadelphia or Washington DC.

According to the findings, published in PLOS One, 92% of the men said they had watched bareback anal sex, and 70% of those revealed that viewing it had led them to re-enacting that they had watched.

48% said they believed watching bareback porn had contributed to them engaging in riskier sex, while 55% said that watching the porn had led them to seek sex afterwards.

In contrast, the study found that men who watched porn with actors that used condoms participated in safer sex.

Eric Schrimshaw, a PHD associate professor at Columbia University, has that the findings proved that the sexual behaviour exhibited in porn does have a real-world effect.

“This lends support to the argument for greater availability for sexually explicit media that contains anal sex in which condoms are clearly used by actors,” he said.

“The potentially negative consequences on behavior, therefore, has policy implications for pornography directors, producers, distributors, performers and viewers.”

A mandate forcing porn actors to wear condoms has been passed by the Los Angeles City Council. However this has caused a lot of the industry to leave the city, and film elsewhere.
