Gay couple labelled ‘batty boys’ by JD Sports shop assistant

By Josh Haggis

A gay couple have claimed they were labelled “batty boys” by a shop assistant in JD Sports.

Gavin Matthews and his partner say that they overheard the anti-gay remark whilst they were shopping in the Eltham Branch of the popular UK-based sports retailer in South London.

“As we walked in my partner said ‘hi guys’ and went to look at the trainers,” Matthews told The Daily Mail, adding that they immediately complained about the use of the word.

“They blocked my way for a while and the guy on the right side said ‘they’re battys innit’. I couldn’t believe it, then he started laughing like he thought he was clever,” he added.

In response to the complaint, a JD Sports customer service spokesperson told Matthews earlier this month: “I have not come across this sort of behaviour previously. I will certainly get this matter looked into for you with the store in question.”
