The couple met in Yale, Iowa when they were youngsters, and then moved to Davenport in 1947. They told reporters that it has taken a lot of love and work to keep their relationship going for the last seven decades.

The couple sat beside each other at Saturday’s ceremony, as Reverend Linda Hunsaker addressed a small group of their close friends and family.

She said: “This is a celebration of something that should have happened a very long time ago.”

During their seven decades together, Vivian and Alice have travelled to all 50 US states, and also made  multiple trips to Canada and the UK.

Same-sex marriage was legalised in Iowa back in 2009.
