Entire Tennessee county office resigns over equal marriage

By Will Stroude

And still the homophobes’ struggle to adjust to the USA’s newfound age of equality continues…

It’s emerged than the entire staff of a Tennessee country clerk’s office have resigned following last week’s Supreme Court ruling which legalised same-sex marriage across all 50 states – despite the fact they’ve not actually received any marriage license applications from same-sex couples.

All three three officers in the Decatur County Clerk’s Office resigned from their positions because of their opposition the decision, the Jackson Sun reports.

Decatur County Commissioner David Boroughs said County Clerk Gwen Pope and her employees Sharon Bell and Mickey Butler cited their religious beliefs as the reason they’ll be signing on sometime in the near future.

“That’s a personal individual decision, but I strongly support them if their faith is that strong,” Boroughs said. “I’m proud of them that their faith is so strong and well-rounded that they feel they can do that.”

County Mayor Mike Creasy added that the office had not received any requests for same-sex marriage licenses.

The news comes after it was reported earlier this week that several county judges in Alabama were refusing to issue marriage licenses to any couples at all – click here to find out more.
