Companies including Apple and Disney urge the Supreme Court to legalise gay marriage

By Josh Haggis

Some of the biggest companies in the US have urged the Supreme Court to rule in favour of same-sex marriage.

A decision from the court on four separate gay marriage cases – Idaho, Kentucky, Michigan and Tennessee – which could result in America legalising same-sex marriage nationwide is due to be announced in June.

Marriage

A new brief submitted to the Supreme Court and signed by more than 350 US-based companies – including global giants Amazon, Google, Disney and Apple – argues that state-wide bans on same-sex marriage damage business because they create a vast number of economic barriers.

“Employers are better served by a uniform marriage rule that gives equal dignity to employee relationships,” states the brief. “Allowing same-sex couples to marry improves employee morale and productivity, reduces uncertainty, and removes the wasteful administrative burdens imposed by the current disparity of state law treatment.”

Meanwhile, a potential US Presidential candidate has argued that “a lot” of Americans are offended by gays using the term “marriage” – find out more here.
