California has passed a bill declaring “gay cure” therapy a “fraudulent practice”.
The California State Senate passed Assembly Bill 2943, which effectively bans the practice by making it possible for people to bring legal action against those who engage in the practice for profit, MetroWeekly reports.
In addition, the bill features protections for anyone who has paid for conversion therapy or has been harmed by allowing them to pursue legal action or recoup any investment they may have made.
The Senate also added several amendments to the bill, stating that it’s unlawful to advertise or sell services that could constitute conversion therapy for profit.
Evan Low, the chief sponsor of the bill, said in a statement: “We as legislators have a responsibility to protect Californians from harmful and deceptive practices.
“All Californians should be celebrated, cherished and loved for who they are. I am grateful to my colleagues in the Senate for affirming their support for those in the LGBT community who need it most by voting for this bill.”
The news comes after Massachusetts failed to pass its own bill to ban conversion therapy for minors.
