Caitlyn Jenner’s Vanity Fair cover met positively in UK

By Ryan Love

A YouGov survey has found that 73% of British people felt positive or had no issue with Caitlyn Jenner’s Vanity Fair cover.

The groundbreaking cover was revealed earlier this week, as Caitlyn made her public debut in a stunning photoshoot by Annie Leibovitz.

An immediate survey of just over 1,600 British adults asked for a one word reaction to the cover, with 25% being negative. Of this, some were directed at the image itself (‘photoshopped’), while others were said to be more confused rather than opposed to transgenderism.

Among the positive reactions were ‘proud’, ‘happy’, ‘inspired’, ‘amazed’, ‘impressed’, ‘envious’ and ‘intrigued’.

The netural reactions (38%) included ‘uninterested’, ‘unmoved’, ‘bored’ and ‘normal’, while the negative responses featured ‘sick’, ‘uneasy’, ‘sad’ and ‘confused’.

YouGov said: “Of the positive reactions, many say they feel proud, have admiration or are empowered by the image. Another popular response is envy – respondents wishing they looked as good as Caitlyn – which could equally be read as a criticism of glossy magazine culture or applause for the subject.

“But the sentiment with the greatest representation is indifference. 38% of British people simply don’t mind or understand why we are even asking about a magazine cover featuring a transgender person.”

The survey also found that 33% of those questioned had met someone who is transgender, with 7% stating that a family member, friend or colleague was transgender.
