Caitlyn Jenner throws support behind anti-gay, anti-trans Republican candidate Ted Cruz

In her first LGBT interview, former Olympian and reality TV star Caitlyn Jenner has given her support to U.S. presidential candidate Ted Cruz, and expressed her desire to serve as a ‘trans ambassador’ to him, should he take the White House.

Speaking to The Advocate, Jenner – who is a lifelong Republican supporter, and has been an opponent of marriage equality – said, “I like Ted Cruz. I think he’s very conservative and a great constitutionalist and a very articulate man. I also think, he’s an evangelical Christian, and probably one of the worst ones when it comes to trans issues.”

Editor Dawn Ennis, who is also transgender, then quizzes Jenner on why she would give the Texan Senator her support.

“I get it. The Democrats are better when it comes to these types of social issues. I understand that,” she explains.

“Number 1, if we don’t have a country, we don’t have trans issues. We need jobs. We need a vibrant economy. I want every trans person to have a job. With $19 trillion in debt and it keeps going up, we’re spending money we don’t have. Eventually, it’s going to end. And I don’t want to see that. Socialism did not build this country. Capitalism did. Free enterprise. The people built it. And they need to be given the opportunity to build it back up.”

She added that she had met Cruz over a year ago, and he was “very nice”, but they have not met since her transition.

She then revealed her desire to serve as an ambassador to Cruz, should he become the next president.

“Wouldn’t it be great, let’s say he goes on to be president, and I have all my girls on a trans issues board to advise him on making decisions when it comes to trans issues. Isn’t that a good idea?… Trans ambassador to the president of the United States, so we can say, ‘Ted, love what you’re doing but here’s what’s going on.’”

Cruz, who is currently trailing Donald Trump at a distant second place in the race for the Republican nomination, is staunchly opposed to LGBT rights, opposing same sex marriage and civil unions. He spoke out in support of Kentucky County Clerk Kim Davis when she was jailed last year for failing to provide marriage licenses to gay couples.

Elsewhere in the interview, Jenner discusses what she has learned since transitioning. “What I have learned in this community is every journey is different. No two stories are the same. Not even close.”
