The release date of the eagerly-anticipated movie uniting comic book hunks Batman and Superman has been pushed back.

The currently untitled film had been scheduled for release in US cinemas on July 17, 2015, but will now arrive around nine months later on May 6, 2016, Warner Bros confirmed yesterday (January 17).

Warner Bros will now release a new Peter Pan movie from Atonement director Joe Wright on July 17, 2015 – with Hugh Jackman starring as the pirate Blackbeard.

“We are happy to take advantage of these coveted summer dates, which are perfect for two of our biggest tentpole releases,” Warner Bros executive Dan Fellman said in a statement.

“We share the fans’ excitement to see DC Comics’ most popular figures, Superman and Batman, together on the big screen for the first time, which will now be arriving in theatres in May 2016. Peter Pan has delighted people of every generation for more than a century, so we are thrilled to bring him back to the screen next summer for today’s moviegoers.”

Alongside Man Of Steel star Henry Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck has been cast as Batman and Gal Gadot (The Fast & The Furious) has signed up to play Wonder Woman in the superhero mash-up movie. Man Of Steel helmer Zack Snyder will return to the director’s chair and shooting is due to start later this year.
