Attitude is seeking a new Sub Editor

THE ROLE

Sub Editor, Attitude Magazine (Full time).

This position reports to the Editor/Acting Editor.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ensure all copy is error-free, factually correct and adhering to Attitude’s entertaining house style
  • Suggest creative headlines, sells and captions for features and cover lines
  • Sub edit all features and rewrite where necessary, in consultation with the Editor and/or Deputy Editor and web editor
  • Fit text to the layout set by the Art Director and Designer
  • Complete all pages strictly within a monthly deadline
  • Proofing Tablet Edition to strict week deadline following meeting print deadline
  • Subbing and proofing invitations, subscriber emails and various other documents
  • You may also be asked to sub and proof special projects with enlisted help, such as Attitude’s Love & Marriage special or Attitude’s gay youth tablet special, aTeen.
  • Occasional writing for print may be required
  • Liaise with external contributors and colleagues in Editorial, Art and Advertising to ensure copy/proofs are on time
  • Attending Attitude events as a representative of the Editorial team when appropriate
  • Proofing/subbing/providing content when required for attitude.co.uk
  • Writing ‘Active’ interviews
  • Writing ‘Real Bodies’ interviews
  • Sourcing and writing property page
  • Contributing to attitude.co.uk with at least one article per day
  • Any additional tasks as set by the editor at any time

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Substantial recent experience as a Sub Editor on a consumer magazine or newspaper is desirable
  • A good knowledge of Adobe InDesign and Photoshop, as well as all Microsoft Office programmes
  • A proven ability to come up with creative headlines and sells in keeping with Attitude’s style
  • Have a keen interest in politics and LGBT issues
  • Be able to converse and write about popular culture, fashion, style, music, TV and film
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Understanding of print media, mobile app publications and online editorial
  • Be able to work well in a team environment
  • Be self-motivated with a strong work ethic
  • Be able to adhere to strict deadlines
