An anti-gay religious banner has been hung up at a rumoured gay cruising site in Northern Ireland.

The sign has mysteriously appeared in a lay-by at McKee’s Dam in County Down, bearing Bible verses which denounce homosexuality, the News Letter reports.

The large sign – which has been suspended between two trees and is visible from the road – reads: “Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is an abomination. Leviticus 18:22.”

The McKee Dam made headlines in 2008 after being listed as a gay crusing area online, but the Police Service of Northern Ireland say they are not aware of any illegal activity taking place there.

Chief Inspector Derek McCamley said: “Police in Lisburn are not aware of any complaints in relation to this type of activity in this specific area, however anyone with information can contact police on 101.”

A spokeswoman for the local council added that they weren’t aware of any problems at the site either.

“Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council has not received any official complaints in relation to activities at McKee’s Dam,” they said in a statement.
