American transgender males are more likely to attempt suicide, a new study reveals
The new study found that 51 per cent of transgender males reported at least one attempt

American trans boys are more likely to attempt suicide according to a new study.
The results of the study, Transgender Adolescent Suicide Behavior, found that nearly 14 per cent of all trans teenagers had attempted suicide but 51 per cent of transgender males reported at least one attempt – the highest of any gender identity group.
Around 42 per cent of nonbinary teens were the second highest in the study followed by 30 per cent of transgender females.
The study also found that 28 per cent for questioning teens, nearly 18 per cent for cisgender females and 10 per cent for cisgender males admitted to attempting to take their life.
Notes from the study read: “Identifying as non-heterosexual exacerbated the risk for all adolescents except for those who did not exclusively identify as male or female.
“For transgender adolescents, no other sociodemographic characteristic was associated with suicide attempts.”
The Human Rights Campaign concurred, having found similar trends in its 2018 LGBTQ Youth Report.
Ellen Kahn of the HRC Foundation, said: “These harrowing statistics lay bare the urgency of building welcoming and safe communities for LGBTQ young people, particularly for transgender youth.
“The distressing reality reflected in this study is preventable, and our nation’s schools, political leaders, and communities can take concrete steps to combat this epidemic.
“HRC will continue to work with schools, faith communities, health care facilities, policy-makers, and families to ensure that LGBTQ youth are able to live full, healthy lives.”
