40% of transgender people have attempted suicide, new study finds

By Fabio Crispim

A new survey by the National Centre for Transgender Equality surveyed 27,715 transgender people and found that 40% of them have attempted suicide throughout their lifetime.

The survey took data from transgender people living in the US along with three other US territories and military bases. According to the Guardian, it looked at discrimination, harassment, violence and the employment of transgender people.

It found that 14% of trans people who disclosed their identity to family, were sent to a professional to ‘stop’ them from being transgender.

10% of the people asked in the 2015 US Transgender Survey report that a family member was violent toward them and 8% were kicked out of their home.

At school, 54% of transgender people reported being verbally harassed while another 24% report getting physically attacked and 13% were sexually assaulted.

15% of transgender people report being unemployed, three times higher than the national average in the US.

Victoria Rodriguez-Roldan, director of the National LGBTQ Task Force said, “The report findings are devastating and unfortunately not surprising.”
