Rob Jetten, poised to become the Netherlands’s youngest and first gay prime minister, has already made history – and attracted attention for his Olympic athlete boyfriend and playful social media presence.
At 38 years old, Jetten led Democrats 66 to a major win in the recent Dutch election, overtaking far-right figure Geert Wilders and positioning himself for the premiership.
He was elected to the Dutch House of Representatives in 2010 at age 23, becoming one of the youngest MPs in Dutch history, and later became the party’s youngest leader in 2023.
Who is Rob Jetten’s boyfriend?
First things first: no, he is not single! Jetten is engaged to Nicolás Keenan, a 28-year-old Argentine field hockey player and two-time Olympian, who has a strong online presence, giving fans an insider look into their Red, White & Royal Blue–coded relationship.
Jetten and Keenan publicly announced their engagement to Instagram during the 2024 Paris: “Soon we will be Mr & Mr,” wrote the caption.
The couple are reportedly planning a wedding in summer 2026. The Netherlands became the first country to legalise same-sex marriage 25 years ago.
Beforehand, in 2021, his playful “bromance” with another Dutch politician went viral on TikTok, drawing widespread public attention to his sexuality.
Jetten’s education, policies and campaign
He was born on 1 March 1987 in Veghel, North Brabant, Netherlands, later studying public administration at Radboud University Nijmegen, where he also earned a master’s degree in public administration and political science.
Throughout his parliamentary campaign, Jetten promoted LGBTQ+ rights, affordable housing, asylum reform, and national unity.
He promised to build ten new towns and increase housing construction to 100,000 homes annually.
He also plans to submit asylum applications outside the EU, strengthen integration programmes, and streamline bureaucracy.
Government policy, he said, would be aimed at ensuring “people that really are fleeing from war and violence are received in a decent way, learn the language and can participate (in society), and that the rotten apples are pulled out of the system and are deported.”
Jetten on LGBTQ+ rights
During his campaign, he highlighted that D66 signed a “Rainbow Agreement” with the LGBTQ+ advocacy group COC Netherlands, committing to strengthen rights for the queer community.
As part of the agreement, Jetten is set to re‑introducing the transgender law that had previously been withdrawn. Ultimately, the overturn will make it easier for trans people to change their legal gender on their birth certificate.
On election night, Keenan posted a TikTok saying, “Election night, let’s go,” in which the couple looked cosy in matching navy suits; the video concluded with a heartfelt kiss.
Jetten posted on Instagram thanking his partner for his support: “Dear Nico, thank you for your unconditional support… I cannot do this without you.”
