Sam Smith has told Shawn Mendes “we’re all learning together” after the ‘Senorita’ singer publicly misgendered them last week.

Mendes made the mistake while introducing Sam at iHeartRadio’s virtual Jingle Ball last Thursday (10 December).

Former Attitude cover star Sam, who recently released their third studio album Love Goes, revealed they identify as gender non-binary and go by they/them pronouns last year.

“It absolutely slipped my mind”

Later addressing the gaffe in his Instagram stories, Mendes said: “Oh @samsmith I’m so sorry for referring to you as a ‘he’ for your jingle ball introduction.

“It absolutely slipped my mind. Wont happen again. [Sic]”

Sam soon responded, saying: “We’re all learning together. Happy holidays, all my love xx.”

Last week, ‘Stitches’ singer Mendes addressed speculation around his sexuality, telling The Guardian: “There was A desperation for me to come out as being gay, which is such a ridiculous thing.

“I got upset because I know people who are gay who haven’t come out and I know the suffering they experience because of that.

“It’s just completely ignorant and insensitive of people to be on that shit.”

Shawn recently dropped his new album Wonder.
