Attitude has released an exclusive clip from La bola negra, the new film from Spanish directing duo Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi, ahead of its UK cinema release on Friday (6 November).
Known professionally as Los Javis, the filmmakers co-wrote and directed the Spanish-language drama with playwright Alberto Conejero. The film follows three men living in different periods of Spanish history, with their stories connected by sexuality, desire, family history and the legacy of writer Federico García Lorca.
La bola negra‘s three storylines take place in 1932, 1937 and 2017. Milo Quifes plays Carlos, a young man seeking acceptance in 1930s Spain. Guitarricadelafuente stars as Sebastián, a musician caught up in the Spanish Civil War, while Carlos González plays Alberto, a historian who discovers a family secret.
What is La bola negra about?
Sebastián’s story centres on his relationship with Rafael, a Republican soldier played by Miguel Bernardeau. After being drawn into the Nationalist forces during the war, Sebastián is tasked with guarding Rafael, a prisoner whose presence prompts him to confront his sexuality.
Alberto’s storyline begins when he inherits something from his estranged grandfather, prompting him to investigate his family’s past. The film links these characters across generations, examining how personal histories intersect with Spain’s political and social changes.
La bola negra takes its title from an unfinished work by García Lorca, the Spanish poet and playwright who was killed in 1936 during the early stages of the Spanish Civil War. Its story also draws on Conejero’s play La piedra oscura, alongside the legacy of García Lorca’s writing.
La bola negra‘s cast
The cast includes Penélope Cruz, Glenn Close, Lola Dueñas and Julio Torres, alongside Quifes, Guitarricadelafuente, Bernardeau and González. The project marks Guitarricadelafuente’s acting debut, with the singer-songwriter also contributing an original song, ‘La Nieve’, to the film.
Los Javis received the Best Director award at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival for La bola negra. The film has also been selected as Spain’s submission for the International Feature Film category at the 2027 Academy Awards.
Altitude Film Distribution is handling the film’s UK release. It opens in UK cinemas on 6 November.
