The BBC has cancelled I Kissed a Boy and I Kissed a Girl after four groundbreaking seasons, but host Dannii Minogue has hinted the popular LGBTQ+ dating franchise may not be gone for good.
I Kissed a Boy launched in 2023, making history as the UK’s first gay dating show. The following year, a spin-off, I Kissed a Girl, followed, featuring lesbian and bisexual daters.
The latest series saw men from across the UK enter the masseria, bringing drama, romance and honesty – offering viewers a glimpse of real gay dating experiences.
“We have to make difficult choices in light of our funding challenges” – the BBC on why I Kissed a Boy and I Kissed a Girl has been cancelled
The BBC announced yesterday that the hit dating series would not be renewed for a fifth season. In a statement to The Sun, a spokesperson said: “We are exceptionally proud of I Kissed A Boy/Girl, the UK’s first dating show for the LGBTQ+ community.
“We would like to thank our fabulous cupid Dannii Minogue and the entire team at Twofour for bringing the series to screen. Unfortunately, we have to make difficult choices in light of our funding challenges and there are no current plans for the show to return.”
Minogue spoke out about the news on social media. Despite the cancellation, she remained positive as the second series of I Kissed a Girl prepares to air in the coming months.

“Lots of love, and I’m all right,” the Australian singer said. “Two full productions have put together this TV show and this series, and to the BBC, who put this groundbreaking television on air – I’m so happy to be part of it.”
Minogue continued: “This show makes me super proud because it’s a chance to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. We’ve had so many incredible cast members share their love, their lives and their stories as part of our show. Season four, featuring the girls, is not far off – you’ll get to see it shortly.”

It was her final statement, however, that has got everyone speculating that the franchise may return, as she said: “And who knows where the IK series will go from there? Ciao, bella.”
The series has brought representation to the forefront of viewers’ living rooms, from Adam Williams coming out as HIV positive on the show to Lars Fellows becoming the first trans man to be cast.

Adam Williams, from series 2 of I Kissed a Boy, said on his Instagram Story: “Don’t know how I feel about this; it seems reflective of how the world and companies are treating LGBTQ+ cases. Makes me very, very sad.”
Lars Fellows penned a similar statement on his Instagram Story: “Yet another LGBTQ+ show cancelled due to funding…” followed by a skull emoji.
Jack Smith, also from series 2, highlighted that despite the cancellation, the message of LGBTQ+ visibility remains.
“Shows come and go. Our community doesn’t” – Jack Smith on LGBTQ+ visibility
“Just because a big corporation decides not to continue a show doesn’t mean the people, the stories, or the community behind it suddenly disappear. We exist far beyond a TV schedule,” he wrote on Instagram.
Reflecting on his time on series 2 of the gay-dating series, he added: “It changed my life and I met people that are now in mine forever. No cancellation can take that away from the people who lived it or the people who saw themselves in it. Shows come and go. Our community doesn’t.”
The I Kissed a Boy/Girl franchise is available to stream now via BBC iPlayer.
