Years & Years' Olly backs Stonewall anti-bullying campaign

Years & Years frontman Olly Alexander has continued to show his willingness to give back to the LGBT community after joining Stonewall’s anti-bullying campaign.

The 25-year-old singer and former Skins star signed the LGBT charity’s #NOBYSTANDERS pledge last week, which aims to stamp out homophobic language and behaviour in the classroom, home and workplace.

The pledge – which has been signed by over 16,000 people already – reads: “I will never be a bystander to bullying and teasing language. If I hear it, I will call it out and if I can, I will stop it.

“By adding my name, I promise to stand up for fairness, kindness and never be a bystander.”

Olly – who recently revealed that “FaceTime sex” was the secret to his successful relationship with Clean Bandit musician Neil Neil Milan Amin-Smith – previously discussed his use of male pronouns on Year & Years’ chart-topping debut album Communion, admitting he finds it “sad” that some gay pop stars still feel like they can’t direct their lyrics towards men.

Stonewall’s Chief Executive Ruth Hunt previously said of the charity’s #NOBYSTANDERS campaign: “We recognise that discrimination comes in all forms and starts early – in the playground name-calling and teasing that many people still tolerate and consider ‘normal’.

“So we’ve started the #NOBYSTANDERS campaign to unite everyone in Britain and encourage them to take a stand against bullying in all its forms.

“No one can afford to be a bystander to bullying and that is why we are calling on every single person in Britain to sign the #NOBYSTANDERS pledge: hear it, stop it.”
