Who’d have known? Elton John and David Bowie spent the last 40 years feuding
Elton John has revealed that his friendship with the late David Bowie ended 40 years ago, and that the pair were not able to sort out their differences before the death of Bowie.
According to Metro, the friendship between the two stars, who used to spend wild nights out in gay clubs together, ended in the 1970s after David referred to Elton as “rock ‘n’ roll’s token queen” in a Rolling Stone magazine interview, which Elton found “snooty”.
Speaking to the Evening Standard, Elton said: “David [Bowie] and I were not the best of friends towards the end. We started out being really good friends. We used to hang out together with Marc Bolan, going to gay clubs, but I think we just drifted apart. He once called me ‘rock’n’roll’s token queen’ in an interview with Rolling Stone, which I thought was a bit snooty.”
However, Elton did take the time to say that he found that Bowie’s death was “classy”.
“I wasn’t his cup of tea. But the dignified way he handled his death, I mean, thank God. I knew he’d had a heart attack on stage in Berlin years ago, but not about the cancer.
“Everyone else take note of this: Bowie couldn’t have staged a better death. It was classy.”
