Violet Chachki talks fashion, sisterhood, and life after Drag Race

By Will Stroude

In a series stuffed full of fashion queens, Violet Chachki rose to the top and snatched the season seven crown back in 2015.

Since then she’s gone on to make a splash in the fashion and burlesque worlds, with her arresting performance skills and incredible eye for style. It’s been a huge year for Ms Chachki, but she’s far from ready to rest on her laurels.

In an exclusive interview with Attitude’s September Style Issue – available to download now and in shops next Wednesday (August 17), the 24-year-old reveals what life’s been like since she became drag royalty.

“There’s tons of pressure, especially being a winner”, she told us. “As far as being a role model is concerned, drag to me has always been punk, it’s always been underground so it’s a weird thing for it to become so mainstream.

“Before Drag Race the stuff I was doing was a lot more raunchy… so it’s weird to have a younger fan base. You have to think about what’s appropriate and what’s not.

“I have to remind myself that it doesn’t matter who’s watching, you can be a role model by being more what drag is essentially about”.

Violet may have been accused of being a little bitchy on her season, but it’s all love when it comes to her Drag Race family.

Commenting on the girls she worked with on the Battle Of The Seasons live tour, she says.”I think there is a sisterhood with everyone… you can especially see that after what happened in Orlando

“I was on tour with these girls when it happened and I looked around and was like, ‘oh my God, these girls are really my family.'”
