Joan Rivers is now believed to be in “stable but critical” condition after she reportedly stopped breathing during throat surgery earlier today (August 28).

According to TMZ, the 81-year-old comedian was undergoing a procedure on her vocal cords when she stopped breathing and was rushed to the emergency ward at The Mount Sinai hospital in New York.

At the time, Rivers was said to be “in critical condition”, but E! – the US showbiz TV network for whom Rivers hosts weekly show Fashion Police – is now reporting that her status is “stable but critical”.

Meanwhile, a representative from The Mount Sinai hospital has released the following statement to the press:

“This morning, Joan Rivers was taken to The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, where she is being attended to. Her family wants to thank everybody for their outpouring of love and support. We will provide an update on her condition as it becomes available.”

Rivers turned 81 on June 8. She has hosted Fashion Police on E! since 2010 and is due to embark on a stand-up tour of the UK this October.
