Cult US teen drama The Vampire Diaries has cast its first gay character.

Actor Chris Brochu, pictured right, will join the cast as Luke, whom E! Online describe as “fun and charming”, but with a “secret agenda”.

Luke will make his first appearance in episode 16 of the supernatural series’ fifth season, which airs on US network The CW on March 20. In the UK, The Vampire Diaries airs on ITV2.

The Vampire Diaries, based on the book of the same name by LJ Smith, launched on The CW in 2009 and has recently been renewed for a sixth season. It stars Paul Wesley, Ian Somerhalder, Nina Dobrev and Steven R McQueen.

Chris Brochu has previously appeared in the films Soul Surfer and Lemonade Mouth, and made TV appearances in shows including Hannah Montana and Melissa & Joey.
