Sting’s daughter Eliot Sumner discusses sexuality for first time

By Will Stroude

Eliot Sumner has publicly dicussed her sexuality for the first time, saying that she’s never had to come ‘come out’ to anyone because those closest to her “always knew”.

In an exclusive interview with ES magazine to be published tomorrow, Sumner reveals she has been dating Austrian model Lucie Von Alten for two years. The 25-year-old, who is the third of Sting and Trudie Style’s four children, adds she doesn’t believe in labels or identify with a particular gender.

The musician – who released her debut album under the moniker ‘I Blame Coco’ back in 2010 – reveals that she never felt they need to come out because “no one had ever asked”, and those closest to her already knew; though she admits that her sexuality is something she struggled with in the past.

“They knew already,” she says. “So I didn’t need to [come out]. I’ve never come out to anyone. My friends always knew and I always knew”.

Asked whether she identifies with a particular gender, she replies “no”, before saying that she defines herself only as a “musician”.

“I don’t believe in any specifications,” she says.

“I think forever I was trying to figure out maybe … what I am. But I don’t think anyone should feel pressured to have any kind of label or tag on them.

“We should treat everybody the same. Me, I don’t like to be put down to a specific thing. We’re all human beings.”

Sumner’s full interview with ES is published tomorrow (December 2). Her second album, Information, is due to be released on January 29.
