The pair have vowed to return next year for their eagerly-anticipated series of shows.

In inevitable but no less sad news, Whoopi Goldberg’s eagerly-anticipated return to the role of Deloris Van Cartier in the West End production of Sister Act: The Musical has been postponed until 2021.

In a video message with Jennifer Saunders – who was due to appear as Mother Superior during the special run of shows this summer – Goldberg confirmed that the shows will now take place next year as the UK continues to deal with the coronavirus pandemic, and that existing tickets will be honoured (they’re also still on sale here).

“We are thrilled with the overwhelming support from people all over the world who have been buying tickets for Sister Act,” Goldberg said in a statement.

“We are all disappointed not to be able to do the show this summer, but Jennifer and I can’t wait to see you all next year”.

In the video message, Saunders added: “Well, it’s very annoying that we can’t do Sister Act this year, but obviously because of the virus it’s impossible.

“We’re going to do it next year at exactly the same time, and all the tickets you’ve bought will be honoured. You can sit in exactly the same seat you were going to sit in this year and enjoy the show.

“So I’ll see you then – and in the meantime please stay well and please stay safe.”

Goldberg and Saunders’ Sister Act run, which was was due to open at London’s Eventim Apollo from 21 July 2020 to 30 August 2020, will now take place from 20 July 2021 until 29 August 2021 at the same theatre.

Producer Jamie Wilson said: “Due to COVID-19, We have made the very difficult decision to reschedule our London run of Sister Act to 2021.

“By rescheduling the production exactly 12 months later to the same performance dates, meaning ticket holders keeping their same seats, we believe we have made the best decision open to us.

“I would like to thank the team at the Eventim Apollo, Whoopi, Jennifer and everyone involved with the show who has reworked their schedules to make this move possible. We can’t wait to open the convent next year and share this incredibly celebratory musical with you all.”

Sister Act starring Whoopi Goldberg and Jennifer Saunders is at London’s Eventim Apollo from 21 July – 30 August 2021, and you can get your tickets here.
