Sexiest Male, Female awards axed from British Soap Awards

By Ryan Love

The British Soap Awards have axed the ‘Sexiest Male’ and ‘Sexiest Female’ categories.

The annual ceremony is due to take place in Manchester on May 16th, but will not feature the two awards for the first time since they began in 1999.

“It was time to have a bit of a freshen-up. We’ve had great fun celebrating the soap world’s sexiest for the last 16 years but it was time to make a few changes,” an insider told the Daily Star Sunday.

“The awards will still be a big, fun celebration but we’ve found a lot of the actors and actresses are a bit embarrassed by the ‘sexiest’ tag.”

Former Coronation Street actress Michelle Keegan picked up the ‘Sexiest Female’ award for the sixth consecutive year in 2014, while Hollyoaks star Danny Mac won ‘Sexiest Male’ for the second time.

“Michelle never understood why she kept winning but was always very flattered. And Danny Dyer, who was nominated last year, found it all a bit of a joke,” the source added.

Other former winners include Scott Maslen, Rob James-Collier, Nigel Harman, Jessie Wallace, Roxanne McKee and Tamzin Outhwaite.

The upcoming ceremony will see the addition of an award which will reward the best portrayal of issue-based storylines.
