Sam Smith: ‘Being called fat hurts more than being called faggot’

By Josh Haggis

Sam Smith has insisted that negative comments about his weight hurt more than ones about his sexuality.

Smith, who recently claimed that there’s a lot of homophobia in the LGBT community, has explained in a new interview that his relationship with food has been unhealthy ever since he used it as a method of coping during times in his life.

“When I was at school and wasn’t having a great time or when music wasn’t going very well,” he said during an appearance on 60 Minutes. “I would eat, eat. Eating would make me feel better, when I felt lonely I would eat.”

He went on to claim that being labelled a faggot by homophobes doesn’t hurt him because he’s “proud” of being gay.

“If someone called me fat, that affects me way more than someone calling me a faggot,” he said. “I think just because I’ve accepted that, if someone calls me a faggot, it’s like, I am gay and I’m proud to be gay so there’s no issues there.”

Meanwhile, Smith recently spoke about being the victim of a homophobic attack when he first moved to London – find out more here.
