RuPaul says Donald Trump’s election victory ‘feels like the death of America’

Legendary drag queen RuPaul didn’t hold back when asked about his thoughts on Trump’s impending presidency at Sunday’s (December 11) Critics’ Choice awards.
The Emmy award-winning performer, who had been a staunch supporter of Hilary Clinton, mourned the result in the immediate aftermath of Trump’s shock victory, Tweeting, “Finding it hard to carry on “business as usual” after America got a giant swastika tattooed on her forehead.”

Elaborating on his feelings about the incoming President, Ru told Vulture magazine how he’d lost sleep at the prospect. “Last night I woke up at 1:30 in the morning and I remembered what happened and I couldn’t get back to sleep,” he said.
“It’s sad. I’m still so heartbroken over it. It feels like the death of America.
“The America that we have all fought so hard for, the narrative of love and peace and liberty and equality, it feels like it is dead,” he lamented.
Despite a number of pro-equality soundbites, Trump made several pledges throughout his election campaign that threatened LGBT+ rights, including promising to appoint conservative Supreme Court justices and supporting the First Amendment Defense Act, which seeks to allow “religious freedom” to discriminate against people based on sexual orientation and gender equality.
Meanwhile, a senior Republican politician recently claimed he’d received “very positive signals” that Donald Trump will roll back LGBT+ rights when he becomes President of the United States next month.
