Prince to make surprise appearance at Glastonbury Festival?

Prince is reportedly in talks to make a surprise appearance at Glastonbury Festival this week (June 25-29), according to one national newspaper.

The 56-year-old Purple Rain singer had previously been rumoured to be headlining the event before Arcade Fire, Metallica and Kasabian were confirmed as the acts leading this year’s line-up.

However, sources have said that Prince may be in line to make play a surprise set at Whitworthy Farm. One so-called ‘source’ told The Sun newspaper: “Prince wants to show up somehwere as a surpirse. He has spent so much time in the UK lately, he’d love to do an impromptu set.”

The funk-pop legend has been touring the UK over the last few months with his all-girl rock band 3rd Eye Girl, having appeared at the BRIT awards back in February.

The source also claimed that current headliners Metallica had considered covering Purple Rain in tribute to the singer, but that frontman James Hetfield was against the idea.

“There was the suggestion of them covering Prince, reminiscent of then Jay Z came on to Wonderwall [by Oasis], but it got a firm ‘No’, mostly from singer James Hetfield,” the source claimed.

Glastonbury organiser Michael Eavis confirmed on Sunday (June 22) that the Purple Rain singer had indeed been in talks to play at the event: “We wanted him to play, and it got to the point where his people were talking to us about him doing it, but before he confirmed he got really upset because he thought we had advertised that he was playing,” he told The Guardian.

“We hadn’t, but with social media, rumours get everywhere, and one of those rumours was that Prince was coming. So he didn’t want to do it in the end.”

Glastonbury 2014 will be headlined by Arcade Fire, Metallica and Kasabian, and also includes performances from Lana Del Rey, Blondie and Lily Allen, Tickets for the event are now sold out, but festival coverage will be provided across the weekend on Radio 1 & 1Xtra, 6Music, BBC One, BBC Two, BBC Three and BBC Four,
