Once Upon a Time to introduce first same-sex relationship

By Will Stroude

Fans of Once Upon a Time are set to see the US fantasy drama’s first same-sex relationship in the show’s upcoming fifth season.

Bosses revealed the news to Entertainment Weekly at a screening of the season five premiere last week (September 18), but have so far refused to confirm which characters will be involved in the romance.

There has, however, been ongoing speculation about the nature of Mulan’s (Jamie Chung) feelings for Aurora (Sarah Bolger). Pressed about the possibility of exploring the relationship in greater detail when Mulan returns to the show this year, executive producer Edward Kitsis teased: “We know that community have been big supporters of the show and we would love to be able to tell a love story that reflects that”.

Fellow producer Adam Horowitz added: “We want the show to reflect the world as it is now. Whether that’s going to be with any particular character, we’re not going to say.”

Kitsis interjected: “But it is something that we’re going to do this year.”

“It’s something we want to do this year,” Horowitz continued. “It’s something we think is due and important to do on the show. This is the world we live in.”

Jaime Chung is set to reprise her role as Mulan across multiple episodes next season, but regardless of who the romance occurs between, it’ll be the first time a same-sex couple appeared in Storybrooke.
