The creators of Netflix‘s Wednesday have ruled out any chance of a romance between Wednesday Addams and her roommate Enid Sinclair.

Season two sees Jenna Ortega return as the iconic eldest Addams sibling, tackling another round of dark mysteries. The story is split into two parts, with more gothic drama to come in part two.

Ortega is joined by both returning and new cast members. Billie Piper appears as Isadora Capri, Joanna Lumley takes on the role of Grandmama Addams, and Steve Buscemi joins as Nevermore Academy’s new principal, Barry Dot.

“They’re very much friends,” co-creator Alfred Gough on Wednesday and Enid

One of the central dynamics this time is between Wednesday and Enid – played by Emma Myers – the upbeat counterpart described as the “yin” to Wednesday’s “yang”. However, co-creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar have confirmed the characters’ relationship will remain platonic.

Speaking to Decider, they addressed fan calls for a queer romance, explaining that the series focuses on “the idea of sisterhood and what that means”.

“It’s a show about female friendship, and people can read into it whatever they want, which is great. I mean, that’s the beauty of television, is people can take ownership, but they’re very much friends,” Gough said.

“It’s really a show exploring that female friendship.”

Millar added: “It’s amazing that they’ve been embraced in that way. I think it’s something that’s very special, unique about that,” he said.

“You have a show that is about, at its core, these two teenage girls who need each other and have found that connection. And they’re very, very different.”

Part one of Wednesday season two is available now on Netflix. Part two will be released on 3 September.
