‘Neighbours’ set for first same-sex wedding

The Australian soap is lining up a historic storyline.

By Will Stroude

Neighbours is set for the first same-sex wedding in the soap’s 33-year history as Aaron Brennan and David Tanaka get engaged next week.

In scenes set to air in Oz next Friday (May 18), former stripper Aaron (Matt Wilson) will pop the question to David (Takaya Honda) during a romantic trip to the beach.

Should the on-again, off-again couple make it down the aisle, Neighbours will become the first Australian TV soap to air a same-sex wedding since equal marriage was legalised in the country last Decembe – something actor Matt Wilson is all too happy about.

“It’s perfect”, the 29-year-old told Radio Times. “The Australian government has been talking about legalisation for so long but kept finding reasons why it couldn’t happen. Now it’s happened it makes the storyline even more special.

“I would love for Aaron and David to be the first, but we have to do it right. We are all invested in making it happen.”

Wilson, a former underwear model who quickly caught viewers’ attention after joining the cast of Neighbours back in late 2015, also had some ideas about the celebrity guest he’d like to see attend Erinsboro’s first same-sex wedding ceremony.

“It would be cool if we get Tom Daley over for it, he said. “He was just here in Oz for the Commonwealth games. Him and his partner Lance are big advocates of same-sex marriage, how great would it be if they did a cameo?

“And seeing as Aaron has two brothers and might find it hard to choose between them as best man, he could just ask Tom Daley to do it!”

Neighbours continues weekdays on Channel 5 at 1.45pm and 5.30pm.
