Narcos season three just aired a sexy and powerful gay scene – and homophobes aren’t happy

By Will Stroude

This article contains spoilers for Narcos season three that some readers may wish to avoid.

The third season premiere of Narcos got fans talking over the weekend over its inclusion a sexy and powerful gay scene featuring one of the US crime drama’s most ruthless characters.

The gritty series, which is loosely based on the violent real-life rise of Colombian drug cartels in the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s, returned to Netflix on Friday (September 1), and series opener ‘The Kingpin Strategy’ had viewers gripped for all the right reasons.

The episode saw gay Colombian drug lord and Cali Cartel member Hélmer ‘Pacho’ Herrera (Alberto Ammann) enter a packed bar with violence on his mind, before grabbing a nearby man and dancing a sensual salsa together as fearful punters watched on.

Ammann, who has played Pacho since the show’s first season, tells Complex of the unexpected scenes: “It was a way to show how crazy this guy could be and a little dessert before [the kill].”

He adds: “Nobody laughs or moves a hair because they know this guy is terrible and very violent and he’s doing this for respect and to shut up everyone.”

Sadly, the artfully-shot scene divided viewers online, with the right-minded welcoming the exploration of homosexuality in a the macho, violent drug underworld, and others, well, simply being grossly homophobic.

For every comment declaring the scene to be “everything”, there was another opining the fact that people just “can’t escape the gay shit”, even in their favourite TV show.

Well sorry to tell you bigots, but gays on screen are here to stay – even on the most cocaine-filled, gun-toting TV dramas.
