Eric Stonestreet has described his Modern Family character, Cam, as a “bossy fussy bottom”.

The actor, who identifies as straight, stars as the flamboyant Cameron Tucker on the hit US sitcom. A storyline earlier this year saw Cam wed his partner Mitchell – played by out gay actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson – after gay marriage became legal in California.

“Jesse and I call Cam a fussy bottom. A bossy fussy bottom. Whatever that means,” Stonestreet said in an interview with the Huffington Post.

The actor went on to admit that he shares a few personality traits with the exuberant character he plays on screen, saying: “I wouldn’t be as successful as some people think I might be at playing Cam if I didn’t possess some of the same qualities as Cam. I am not as fun, probably. Fun in a different way.”

He continued: “People are genuinely disappointed when they meet me, because they really wanna meet Cam, and when they see me they’re like: ‘Oh okay, hey, it’s nice to meet you’. And then off they go! I get a lot of questions like: ‘Are you not feeling well?’ And I’m like: ‘Nope, I’m just being myself bro’.

An Iranian remake of Modern Family recently wrote out the show’s gay characters – read more about it here.
